Introduction Author of "Contra Cross" and "Us and Them," Bill Meara was a Foreign Service officer from 1987 to 2019 and a U.S. Army officer from 1983 to 1987. As a college student he was a volunteer English teacher in Huehuetenango, Guatemala. In the army he worked in Panama, Honduras, and El Salvador. His first tour in the Foreign Service took him back to Honduras where he served as Special Assistant to the U.S. Ambassador and as an Embassy liaison officer to the Nicaraguan Democratic Resistance. Other Foreign Service assignments include Spain, Dominican Republic, The Azores, London, and Rome. His final assignment in the Foreign Service was on the faculty of the National War College where he taught from 2017 to 2019.
