Introduction | Teaching in Ecuador is my attempt to reconnect with my dreams. After obtaining a degree in soil physics from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, I joined the Peace Corps and spent two years in Costa Rica. My emphasis was soil and water conservation. I think soil is really interesting stuff, so simple and fundamental yet so rich and complex. Conserving soil and the carbon it contains may be the most basic natural resource conservation there is, protecting our ability to feed ourselves and reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the air. But none of that would be interesting if it weren't for the people who work the soil, growing food out of it and making civilization possible. I am not sure yet how I will help the farmers of Pistishi, but I will start by helping their children attend high school. We'll see what happens next. |
