About me

LocationCanberra, ACT, Australia
IntroductionDan was born (1936) and raised in Kenya where his parents were farmers. Following High School in the UK and National Service as a pilot in Kenya, he studied Economics at Rhodes University in South Africa (where he met his wife, Maureen), and Agricultural Economics at Cornell and Stanford Universities in the USA. His Doctoral thesis at Stanford was on the smallholder tea industry that was developing very rapidly in Kenya. He taught at the University of Nairobi until 1972 when he moved to the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra where he and Maureen raised their three children. At the ANU, Dan was involved in teaching and research in Agricultural Development Economics. This gave him exposure to the agricultural sectors throughout SE Asia and the Pacific. His studies on coconut here and in Africa convinced him of the need for an alternative processing technology to the crude extractive copra export trade. Dan founded Kokonut Pacific and retired from the ANU in 1997 to commercialise the technology he had invented.
