OccupationCreative Director

IntroductionBack in the early 80’s I was at Washington State University struggling along in engineering classes when a roommate turned me on to graphic design. I soon learned that if I was really serious about a career in design I needed to attend a better school. So in 1983 I headed south to the Art Center College of Design. I graduated with a BFA and was soon recruited by the Chicago office of Ogilvy & Mather to work on Sears, NutraSweet and Waste Management. After a couple years at Ogilvy, I worked for Bozell, JWT and then Hal Riney and Partners on other big brands like Gerber, Blue Cross Blue Shield, John Deere, Oscar Meyer, Illinois Lottery and the Chicago Tribune. I arrived in Portland in 1990 to work at Cole & Weber. Then in 1996, Johnson Sheen Advertising was formed where I honed my skills as a creative director and entrepreneur. That lasted seven years until 2003 when I became a partner and the creative director at Coates Kokes Advertising. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege to work with some amazing people and have been honored with CA certificates of excellence, One Show pencils, National ADDY's, Portland Roseys, Kelly’s and named to AdWeek’s Creative All-Star team.
