IntroductionThrough my sophomore year I attended school in a small, southern Oklahoma town. The school had no African-American students, no Latinos, and only a handful of Native Americans. There were no students with obvious special needs. I began my junior year in California in a high school with faces that represented every minority in the country. Suddenly school was fun, facinating, and exciting for me. I quickly made friends across many groups of students. As an adult I realize that not all of my friends received an equal chance at success. I went on to earn an undergraduate degree at San Jose State University and then, a masters and doctorate at Oklahoma State University. I've taught for more than 30 years in K-12 education and in the university. The one constant that has been my frustration is what gets reported to the public about schools and what the politicians choose to beat the drum about that has little to do with the real issues facing students and schools. I want to talk about these issues and engage in meaningful dialogue with others - thus Education Dialogics.
