Introduction As a retired civil engineer and father of four sons, water particularly the sea has always been important. Throughout an international career of planning design and construction of marine works, particularly ports and harbours, the sea in all its moods has always been ever present. As a boy, the only sports that interested were swimming, skating and canoeing, as well as sailing. And as Father I taught my four sons to sail. Having been sailing for most of my life, I have in excess of 50 years varied sailing experience in various boats from 8 foot pram dinghy to Class 1 ocean racer - I can still remember the first time in a half decker on Barton Broad at the age of 4. Working through the school holidays, paid for my first boat, a Cadet, moving on through various racing dinghies to a Nicholson 26 and now my present love, Alcyone of Lymington, a Contessa 32. Now, 60+ years old and retired although very busy (including Cruising Representative for the Contessa 32 Association) there is more time to enjoy sailing, both racing and coastal cruising.
