| Introduction | This blog was created and written by Gail Brigham who is solely responsible for its content. Dr. Lane Brigham is a well-known carver from Mount Hermon, Louisiana. He is the husband of Rocky Springs Vintage’s shop owner, Gail. The easy to carve wood is tupelo. He has won multiple awards for his work, including 11 Best of Show Awards at the New Orleans Wildfowl Carvers and Collectors Guild, The Cajun Heritage Festival in Larose, and the South Louisiana Wildfowl Carving Competition in Houma, Louisiana. South Louisiana carving competitions are nationally known for the quality of workmanship among exhibitors. Most recently he won the People’s Choice Award at the Pearl River Woodcarvers Guild competition in Jackson, MS. He is a past president of Louisiana Association for Marriage and Family Therapists. | Interests | For his lifelike animal carvings, Lane primarily uses tupelo gum, harvested from Southern lowland swamps. He typically plans and thinks about any project for a year or more before he begins to carve. He carves with a sharp knife and, for detail, sands and fine tunes with a power tool, then burns in each feather or feature with a razor-sharp wood-burning tool. He then seals the piece with lacquer and begins painting with gouache, acrylics and oils. Lane has won numerous “best of show” awards at competitions in several states. |
