| Introduction | To me, being alive is creating... a poem out of an "aha" moment, a home out of junk, a memoir out of life scraps. Every day I hope to salvage another little piece of the past for my memoir. I think Richard Brautigan said it best in Revenge of the Lawn. He wrote: "I’m haunted a little this evening by feelings that have no vocabulary and events that should be explained in dimensions of lint rather than words. I’ve been examining half-scraps of my childhood. They are pieces of distant life that have no form or meaning. They are things that just happened like lint." By studying the art of memoir, I hope to figure out how to make sense out of my own lint moments. I also aim to study nature and environmental writing so that I can discover how nature and the physical world, including the places of my Memphis, Tennessee and Little Rock, Arkansas informed my childhood and coming of age. |
