Introduction The Medusa vs. The Odalisque is the work of James Ley, an essayist and literary critic who lives in Melbourne. His writing has appeared in many publications, including Australian Book Review, HEAT, Australian Literary Review, The Age, the Sydney Morning Herald, and the Times Literary Supplement. In 2014, he won the Geraldine Pascall Prize for Criticism. He is the author of The Critic in the Modern World: Public Criticism from Samuel Johnson to James Wood (Bloomsbury, 2014) and is Contributing Editor at the Sydney Review of Books.
