| Introduction | I'm currently writing the amazing story of my Great Grandfather James Picken Cowey MC. Many years ago my parents were given a book by my Gran entitled “To Kokoda & Beyond”; there in the index lay his name. I was amazed to discover the important role my great grandfather played to his comrades in battle & awestruck by the thought that “I” was descended from such a brave man. The passion to learn the finer details of his life was awakened more recently. It is my overwhelming wish for others to learn about Jim Cowey, a man who was decorated with the Military Cross & amazingly served courageously in both World War 1 & World War 2, including his part in battles ingrained in the Australian psyche – Gallipoli & Kokoda. Yet the man is more than his actions. The contrast between his life in peacetime versus the times when bullets were whizzing around him is stark. His story is a battle with his mind, his body & the tough times in which he lived. My great grandfather is at once thoroughly ordinary & thoroughly exceptional. Jim's story is the tale of an exemplary Digger & quintessential Australian battler & is a story more Australians should know |
