IntroductionFrederick Buechner, the Presbyterian theologian once said that “The place God calls you to, is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep need meet.” That place of my greatest joy has always been walking through the woods, probing pools with a fly for elusive trout, and watching skeins of mallards whistle over the marsh. Several years ago I left the cubicles and corporations behind to make this passion my career. I feel the most alive when my hands are in the soil or when sitting by a river observing its complexity and vibrancy. The natural world is the most dynamic of living organisms. It is an ever changing, intimately connected, over powering, yet infinitely delicate organism that both intrigues and inspires me. Its study and restoration is both my joy and occupation. I have found my “treasure” as Paulo Coelho described it in The Alchemist, in the forms of ecological restoration and aquatic biology. May you each find and follow your passion as well.
