Introduction | I am a type 1 diabetic runner, now also a triathlete. I've been an insulin-dependent diabetic since I was 15 years old, in 1974, and I've been a runner for a little longer. Running has been a personal challenge I choose, for personal benefit. I like to challenge myself, and I enjoy the satisfaction of meeting those challenges. Diabetes is not a challenge I chose to face. It's something that I have to deal with to survive. Given a choice, I would stop being diabetic in a heart beat. The more I live the more I see that everyone has things they have to deal with. I want to eventually complete an Ironman triathlon, swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles, and run 26.2 miles. This is a personal challenge I'm taking on for myself, and for any other diabetics facing doubts that could limit their enjoyment of life. I failed to meet the challenge at Ironman Arizona 2009 and Ironman St. George 2011. Right now, I'm not sure when I will try again, but I will do it. I am currently ramping up my mileage to run a 110 mile ultra. |
