| Introduction | When I was in first grade, the teacher asked what we wanted to do when we grew up. I said, Make people happy. Through my career in corporate advertising and as a freelance writer, I've tried to "use my words" to make my clients happy and successful and to make the buyers of their products and services feel the same way. And while writing will always be my first love, I've had a pretty torrid affair with fabric and sewing, too. I learned to sew in junior high home ec -- bring it back! young people need it! -- and loved making my own clothes. OK, the safari jacket I constructed to wear on the sophomore year field trip to the Milwaukee zoo may not have been the couture triumph I imagined it would be, but the idea that I could take a piece of fabric and turn it into a wearable was amazing to me. After college, I learned to quilt. This changed my life. Color, pattern, design -- at last, I could be an artist. And make people happy through another medium. More than expressive, to me, quilting is therapeutic. As you follow me on my journey here, you'll see how. |
