| Introduction | {my story} I was born, raised, and currently reside in Iowa, though I spent some years in Minnesota and Wisconsin. While I am rooted to the Midwest, I have traveled extensively across the US and Europe. My current work is looking after, entertaining, teaching, and learning from two remarkable kids all the while trying to perfect the art of balance…being a mother, a poet, a thinker, and keeping up with exercise and health. I have yet to perfect all the “me’s” I need and strive to be but I’m working on it. |
| Interests | {how i learned my craft} I’ve always been a lover of a good story and a writer, but I didn’t become a serious writer until graduate school. I earned an MFA in creative writing/poetry from Minnesota State University and it was in this fine writing community that I gained confidence and began to hone my craft. {my inspiration} Nature, beauty in the simple and minute, the connectivity of seemingly conflicting notions, longing, the search for what it means to be whole, and ultimately what I believe all writing emerges from: love. {some of my favorite things} Being consumed for days by a good book, cooking, listening to music, blueberries, swimming, hiking, and dancing. Lots and lots of dancing. {the vision i hope to share with others through my work} That poetry matters. I strive to create lines and images that not only sound nice, but tug at what is core in all of us. I hope to make the world better by making it smaller, in the sense that I try to make my writing accessible and make connections to show how similar we are. Contrasts are everywhere—sometimes I think all media does is highlight our differences, teaching us to compare ourselves to others which can either make us feel better about ourselves in a superficial way or else deplete our self respect. The vision I hope to share with others is that everyone belongs; that every move matters. |
