IntroductionI was a Sussex police officer for 30 years up to 1997 followed by 9 years as civilian staff with them, specialising in partnership crime prevention. In May 2006 I moved to consultancy work with the London Metropolitan Police Safer Neighbourhoods policing programme. I enjoyed good health all my life until I was diagnosed with CLL in December 2002. I received basic chemotherapy for the first two years, followed by two years “remission”. In October 2006, my CLL returned with a vengeance and I was diagnosed as having protein 53 defect with 17p and 11q deletions. A long term solution could have been through a bone marrow transplant. After a year of intensive treatment for my condition and a series of infections, the transplant could not proceed due to damage to my lungs. Now the only way forward is through new drugs coming on to the scene. This blog is dedicated to my wonderful wife Tina, my daughter and son, Anna and Matthew and to a fellow patient in Kings College Hospital with whom I coined the motto - "Never Underestimate the Power of Positive Thinking".
