| Introduction | Tom Franklin has been Chief Executive of the Ramblers, Britain's walking charity, for four years. The Ramblers works to safeguard and extend the places where we can walk, such as our unique network of public paths and open countryside, and to promote the joys and benefits of walking. From countryside to town, from short to long walks, if you like walking, the Ramblers is for you. Tom is currently a member of the Independent Panel which has been established to advise the government on woods and forests policy. He is also a transition trustee for the proposed new Canal & River Trust, which is due to take on the running of Britain's inland waterways from British Waterways next year. Tom will be leaving the Ramblers at the end of 2011, to take up the post of Chief Executive at Think Global, a charity which educates and engages the UK public in global issues: www.think-global.org.uk The Ramblers relies on its members.
