Introduction | Before I got married and 4 years thereafter, I worked for my Mother in Law, who owned a lakeside park that catered company picnics. This was in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Our typical menu included chicken, ham, potato salad, baked beans, and brownies for 2,000 people on Saturdays and a different group of 2,000 people on Sundays. During the week, we had smaller parties (up to 150 people). She had an impressive system for the weekend picnics, but gave me free run of the kitchen for the smaller parties. We kept this breakneck schedule up all summer long. She finally sold the park and we moved. After a few years, I returned to school and embarked on a 35 year career of industrial/organizational psychology. But I kept catering - not as a business, but for friends and family for graduations, showers, anniversaries, and the like. In Seattle, I submitted recipes to the local PBS station and then appeared on a TV special demonstrating my recipes. In 2001, my sisters and I found the joy of working together writing and publishing cookbooks for the home cook. Eleven cookbooks later, we are still writing, publishing, and selling our books. |
