Introduction It all started for me with my Mum’s treadle machine. I used to love watching the little soldier going up and down on the wheel. The soldier I later learned was the wooden stick which joined the foot treadle to the wheel which made the needle go up and down. As I got older I was allowed to help push on the foot treadle, by 11 years old I had made my first garment – a skirt. I come from a sewing family – my Grandfather had a tailor’s shop- he was the cross legged type of tailor, sewing for the gentry. My Grandmother also did her part as a seamstress for a posh department store. This was many years ago in the early 1900s. I have made most of my clothes since the age of 11, as I have got older, fit is more of a challenge but more of a thrill when I get it right – the joy of a pair of trousers which both look superb and allow me to sit down!. I have eclectic sewing skills, and have recently taken to producing fabric art works – either to hang on the wall or as functioning ornaments. I love making bags too, they are a great outlet for creativity without having to worry about the fit.
