Favorite Music I used to be a typical film music listener, who can be easily swayed by most commercial music directors. In fact, in the early days of Raja, I thought that he knew nothing about orchestration. I used to love RD Burman and used to like a lot of Hindi film music. It is sad that RD never got a national award despite his wide range of musical hits involving Bengali folk (Oh Maaje Re – Khushbu), Hindustani (Meete Bol Bhole – Kinara), Gazal (Huzoor Is Khadr – Masoom), light melodies (Tere Bina Zindagi – Andhi) and pop. After RD, there have been no worthwhile MDs in Bollywood and most of today’s MDs in Bollywood not only lack fundamentals of orchestration, but also outsource most music duties to others and steal the credits. I also got carried away by new talents such as Vidyasagar or AR Rahman, till I started paying detailed attention to Raja’s style. I am convinced that he is several cuts above anyone who is in the Indian music business today. I got so riveted to his background music in Cheeni Kum (2007) that this is the first movie that I watched fully the credits as it rolled by. My endeavor with this blog is to uncover mostly Raja's specialty - instrument interludes. In my view, he will be ever remembered as the master of interludes. The sad part is they do not last beyond 2 minutes. Indian Film Music is lucky to get a composer like him. Western Classical Music is unlucky not to get him as one of its modern masters.
