| Introduction | I have always had a great love of photography, it's a wonder I never took any courses. I was more of an artist in school- I would draw or paint things and then look at them at later times and not believe that I was the person who created them. As for photography, I've always been drawn to "real" images- images that spark emotion, but I would simply admire the work of others. In 2001, I embarked on a mission with a dear friend who was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma for the third time in 5 years. I left my job and partnered with her as she underwent experimental treatment- she wanted to write a book about her experience...without words. I ditched my salary and began documenting her journey from January through August of that year. When Joy lost her battle on the 22nd of August in 2001, I held nearly 6,000 negatives in my hands that detailed her life- and death. That was my first introduction to photojournalism. I am still working on discovering a way to tell her story with those images that will instill in others an appreciation for life. I'll keep you posted on that project. |
