Introduction	The Mercantile has had an association with Dames Street and Dublin city centre since the early 19th century. Scottish insurance company North British & Mercantile Insurance who had offices in Edinburgh, Glasgow, London and Calcutta opened their first Irish office on Dames Street in 1835. Dames Street was at that time the commercial and political centre of Ireland and all major financial institutions had premises on the street. This was preceded by the Mercantile Credit Company of Ireland that continued the financial tradition of the Mercantile until 1962.
