| Introduction | Time: The night before Thanksgiving. It’s, like, 1:00 in the morning. Setting: My friend Naomi’s 1995 Toyota Sienna Mini van barreling down I64 at 75 miles per hour trying to get to my sister’s house before dawn. Suddenly, sparks are flying past my windshield like we are in the Millennium Falcon going into hyperspace. But, of course, far from hyperspace we were grinding to a halt as the left front wheel bounced across the left hand lanes of Interstate 64 East, hitting the guard rail and bouncing back towards Naomi’s 1995 Toyota Sienna Mini Van. This is my life and the life of all the single mothers who are considered the working poor. Currently in development, my one woman show, Autoholics Anonymous or My Car is a Pile of Metal and Shame explores car ownership and class using monologues, projections, art work, comedy and story telling. The project came out of my own experience as a woman, officially living in poverty, and the trials of having to get to work or rehearsal, or having to get my children to school or …. in an unreliable car. |
