| Introduction | I write under the name Giovanni de Silentio, though in daily life I am Roberto H. Vásquez. I was born in Viña del Mar, Chile, and now live in Northern California, where my studio is shared with a living constellation of snakes, spiders, birds, and small mammals. Reticulated pythons, tarantulas, quails, pigeons, opossums, lizards, and other creatures are not embellishments to my life but presences that shape my thinking. They bind me to the elemental and the instinctual even as my work reaches toward the philosophical and the numinous. My writing moves at the intersection of phenomenology, symbolic life, and existential experience. I draw from Husserl, Scheler, Heidegger, Kierkegaard, Plato, Nietzsche, Jung, Lacan, and others—not to repeat them, but to continue the older vocation of philosophy as a form of inner disclosure. I seek a thinking that is rigorous without being academic, spiritual without being sentimental, and grounded in what actually appears: dreams, visions, animals, encounters with the Real. Much of my work is an ongoing investigation into Being, dread, freedom, symbolic order, and the strange ways meaning emerges in visions, entheogenic states, etc. |
