| Introduction | I look after a plot of land, a back garden to a house about 1/2 a mile from where I live in Derbyshire. This blog is the story of that garden. The plot is about 225 square metres. 24.5m x 8.5m plus a small area added to one corner. The land has been derelict for many years and is mainly covered in a mixture of ground elder, grasses, docks and bramble. There is a sunken bath in the garden and it also held its share of the world's rubbish. Across the bottom end of the garden is an overgrown hedge now a series of trees. Ash, Sycamore, Hawthorn and Hazel are all there in full splendour. Along one side there is a fence in good condition; on the other is a fence that is rotting and falling down in places.There is also a small garden shed, a bit rickety but serviceable. Across the top end there is a gate for access; and a fence with trellis, planted to screen the land from its neighbour. What I would like it to be is an edible perennial forest garden that I can work and harvest or just go and visit and sit in quiet seclusion amongst the planting. |
