About me

Location Middlesbrough, United Kingdom
Introduction In May 2011 I was elected Chair of the RCGP Adolescent Health Group for a three year term. I am an academic GP, based at Sunderland University and practising in County Durham, in a former mining colliery village. I have four children and am passionate about making children and young people's emotional well-being at the heart of general practice. The photograph I have chosen is a happy souvenir of my Churchill Fellowship visit made to Australia in the autumn of 2010, accompanied by my youngest child, Freya, then 8 years old. Here we are in 'a storybook garden' in Adelaide. The purpose of my Fellowship was to study how GPs had contributed to the delivery of community based services for young people with mental health problems. During my term as Chair I hope to develop our work to include collaborative research which addresses the pressing needs of some of the most marginalized youth in UK society; such as teenagers living in care and young people who have refugee status.
