Don Brown
| Introduction | Born and raised on Long Island in New York. Entered college as an engineering student. Discovered a complete and utter lack of aptitude for calculus of physics. Switched to history and eventually earned a BA. With baccalaureate in hand, found work as busboy. Waiting, cooking, and bar-tending jobs followed, eventually ended up working in saloon on Manhattan's Upper West Side. One of the customers, a publishing art director, explained the world of freelance illustration. With no training, except years of obsessive doodling, became an illustrator. Spent several years drawing and painting for money. Married and became father to two girls. Introduced to children's literature. Armed with nothing but the cockeyed notion that kids needed better biographical picture books, wrote and illustrated Ruth Law Thrills a Nation which was published by Ticknor & Fields in 1992. More than a dozen historical picture books and 3 novels followed. Currently working on projects for Houghton Mifflin and Roaring Brook Press. |
