| Introduction | Ferial Pearson was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya and the first in her immediate family to go to college. She left Africa in 1997 to attend Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, Minnesota. Upon graduating, she taught English at Omaha South High School for ten years and served as the Gay Straight Alliance Club and Unity Club sponsor. She earned her Master's degree in Urban Instruction from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 2009. Ferial left Omaha South High School in 2011 to work as a Talent Advisor for the Avenue Scholars Foundation at Ralston High School until 2013, during which time she created the Secret Kindness Agents project, which became the topic of a book, a TEDx Talk, and now her dissertation. She currently works as an Instructor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha in the Teacher Education Department, and is working on her doctorate in Educational Leadership. She lives in Ralston, Nebraska with her husband Daniel, son Ilahi, and daughter Iman. She has won numerous national and local awards for her work in schools and in the community. |
