Introduction | YA Materials Database LIBR 256, 11 - Wrenn Estes San Jose State University 7 May 2009 The Lima Rating System The system of international maritime signal flags is a way of representing individual letters of the alphabet in signals to or from ships. It is a component of the International Code of Signals (INTERCO). Incidentally, the “L” flag (pictured above) is called Lima. “Lima” also happens to be the Tagalog word for five. My husband is a naval officer, and my ethnic background is Filipino. Thus, my personal rating system is based on flags rather than stars and breaks down as follows 5 Flags – Excellent, a work I highly recommend (fervent “Yes!”) 4 Flags – Good, a work I recommend (“Yes.”) 3 Flags – Okay (shrug, “Eh, sure.”) 2 Flags – Bad, a work I do not recommend. (“Only if you must.”) 1 Flag – Waste of time, a work I do not recommend. (“Please don’t.”) |
