| Introduction | I write under the nom de guerre of Richard Sharpe, a fictional character penned by Bernard Cornwell. The Sharpe series is a cracking read, and was later made into a TV series starring Sean Bean. Cornwell’s character is a lowly born soldier, commissioned in the field by Wellington for an act of individual bravery. He is inspiring because despite his rise in fortune, he still struggles with the ramifications that brings. He is loyal and brave, and it is that that eventually establishes his reputation and drives his actions. My thanks go out to Bernard Cornwell for the joy and inspiration that Sharpe brought to me growing up and in adulthood. |
