Introduction	•Lifelong Virginian. Southern Democrat. •Prodigal grandson of a West Virginia coal baron and late 19th, early 20th century Republican Party boss. Tenth generation great grandson of an American Revolutionary War soldier. Grandson of immigrants. •Been in Roanoke since 1982 with the exception of stints at grad school and military training. Grew up in Springfield, Warrenton, Dinwiddie and Virginia Beach. Did the college thing in Harrisonburg at JMU. •Worked as a counselor and educator, currently at information technology. Spent ten years in the Virginia Army National Guard and another 3 years in the Army Reserves. Took the Oath of Enlistment as PFC, Honorably Discharged as a Major. Commanded a National Guard Company for 4 years. Volunteered for Desert Storm, served stateside. Resigned my commission in 2004, rather than risk involuntary recall to George Bush's War. •Voted for Carter in 1976 and every Democratic presidential nominee since. Voted for Sen John Warner (R) twice, Rep Bob Goodlatte (R) once, most recently for two Republican candidates for Roanoke City Council. Volunteered and canvassed for Barack Obama.
