Introduction Resigned 2 years ago from my job as a tenure-track professor of Japanese literature and culture, after spending 17 of my 40 years at it. The challenge of getting a PhD and being in a high-pressure career served me well, but it's time to make space for creative pursuits. So along with the horseplay and banana bread baking with my 4-year-old,I'm trying my hand at creative writing, cultivating the "beginner's mind" with guitar and drawing, and seeing whether I can get our house to look perfectly decorated--HA!
