Introduction I was born in Marion, North Carolina, in 1946.I retired July 1, 2013, from Appalachian State University. I graduated from UNC Asheville with a degree in International Relations after spending four years in the U.S. Marines. I received my master's degree from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. That degree was in mass communication. In between I worked at several weekly and daily newspapers and a magazine in North Carolina, Illinois and West Virginia. I was at Appalachian State University for 23 years advising the student newspaper, a yearbook, a general interest magazine, and a literary magazine, and teaching journalism. I've enjoyed it, but as with all good things, there is an end to it and that came last summer.
Interests Reading, football, cooking, politics, and afternoon naps.
Favorite Movies Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Alien (the first one), Indiana Jones (the first one and the last one), Last Picture Show (I've always loved Cybill Shepherd), King Kong (the clunky original and Peter Jackson's version), and Earth vs. Flying Saucers (and just about any of those 50s scifi thrillers.
Favorite Music the Beatles, Windham Hill performances, some opera, and the soundtrack to most James Bond movies as well as "Crimson Tide".
Favorite Books Too many to name all of my favorites, but most recently I've enjoyed "Are We Rome?", all of Anne Lamott's books on grace, and just about anything on today's journalism. I also like biographies.

What's the most amount of sand you've ever had in your swimming trunks?

If you've ever been to the North Carolina coast and been knocked down by the waves--a lot and all in the wrong places.
