About me

Location Birmingham, AL
Introduction On a creative note, my prose poetry addresses language and culture; I attempt to incorporate cross-cultural imagery within my own writing to transcend the everyday stereotypes that far too often are used to represent cultures and people. It is my hope that I am able to integrate my understanding of foreign language and culture within my poetic composition. I work with contrasting forms, cultures, and languages to create meaningful tension in my poetry. To this end, I have used my travel experiences to enhance my writing. I made use my trips to Pakistan, Europe, and the Dominican Republic to increase my understanding of culture, language, and art. Attention to language and meaning is central in my creative work. My experiences outside of the United States have had a powerful positive impact on my original poetic work. I found that meaningful interaction with people and cultures other than my own removed my inspiration from a source which could be termed as analytical or academic and grounded it in the real. I continue to be specifically interested in issues of gender, colonial rule, and identity and how they function in the poetic process.
