| Introduction | Surf buddies on Guam: Swingy, Fuqua, Butch, Greg Ambrose, Hank & John Pickop, Da Jones Boys, Koenig, Coco Joe, Benji, Haole, Joey & Alfred Benito, Willy, Dwight, Whitey, Donny & Freddy Waller, Mark Magpale, Eric, Frency Fry, etc. Graduated from JFK in 1972. Saw California for the 1st time in June '72 and hated the cold ocean. Blah! Went back to Guam and Hawaii, and just commuted back & forth for many years. Surfed Sunset Beach for the 1st time in 1975, Pipeline in 1977, and Waimea ... like big Waimea 15' - 18' ...in 1978. I became close friends with Waimea surfers James "Booby" Jones and Keone Downing. I followed those guys out and dang....dem waves are big. I ended up really loving that spot and getting it pretty wired. I glassed a couple of "Rhino Chasers" for Booby Jones; hung out at the Pink Cadillac surf bar in Waikiki; lifeguarded at the OCC - Outrigger Canoe Club. Made many more surfer friends there, and surfed even more North Shore with Felipe & Ricardo Pomar, Kainoa Downing (Keone's younger brother), Tommy Henke, Russ Francis (the ex-tight end for the San Francisco 49'ers) who was quite a surfer with a serious Rhino Chaser. Oh well, surf on. |
