About me

Introduction I come from a long line of singing nomads. On my mother's side, there were yodelers, freethinkers and sleepwalkers. On my father's, Yukon gold miners, railroad engineers and foot soldiers for the military-industrial complex. My life experiences are similarly all over the map but with some astoundingly good luck. I have been a teaching principal of a three-room school in Vermont, a journalist and an ad man in San Francisco and New York City. I rehabbed six houses. And in 1979, in response to an ad in the New York Times, I was hired by the Taunton Press to help launch Fine Homebuilding magazine. Housing has been one of my beats ever since. During the dot-com boom I was editor in chief of an online home-hardware store that CNET/Yahoo! named a Gold Star Site, and to date I have written ten books on home design and renovation.
