Introduction | In 2008 I began managing a small music store. It wasn't independent, it was part of a locally owned chain of stores selling music and movies. At least five times a day I would be overjoyed to have a conversation with a customer about how "noone buys CD's anymore, it's all downloading these days." Still, I managed to hold on to that job for another three years before the doors were shut forever. And by "forever" I mean "until they finished fitting the new ladies shoe store" because, I'm assuming, it's hard for a lady to find a decent pair of sparkly heels these days. My regulars, the folks who would be making special orders for latent obscurities every other week, were all pretty up in arms when they found out we had four weeks left of trade. "The internet has ruined the music industry!" they would say. But, I wondered silently, has it? Has it really? |
