| Introduction | I am the daughter of a Home-Economics teacher who lost her sense of smell at the age of 12, and who grew up out on the prairie of North Dakota. As a result, her culinary interests lean toward pork chops cooked well done and seasoned with Lawry's Seasoning Salt, and baked potatoes with margarine. However, her North Dakota State University Home Economics degree means that she is my resource for every domestic question that stops me in my tracks. She continues to be my hero and inspiration, even though she doesn't necessarily enjoy eating most of what I cook. I have experienced two grand food epiphanies in my life, which I refer to as the "Great Taste Bud Shifts" of 1988 and of 2003. In 1988, I learned to love previously-rejected tomotoes, onions and garlic, and became obsessed with reading cookbooks. In 2003, I fell in love with beans, fresh cracked pepper, olives, and pork products, including bacon (!), all of which I had shunned for my entire preceding life. These days, I cook things and eat them myself, or even better, force other people to eat them and then to praise me. |
