Lionesses have no manes. How do they know when they've grown up?
The female lioness has no need for a mane to tell her she is an adult. For as a lioness grows older she naturally takes up her responsiblities as a grown up raising cubs & catching food for the male lions how are still laying there grooming their mane wondering what they must do now that they too are grown.
