| Introduction | Born in 1944, I was a “war baby” birthed in Harlan County, Kentucky, amidst an army of relatives who are with me still, albeit in memories of the old days. Dad went off to war when I was a month old. Eventually, I was married to a military man, and together, we raised three daughters. My present home used to be a church and is nearly 100 years old; it is a wonderful historic, unique place. I have written three books—Coal Dust, Mountain Stranger, and A Great Heart. I have co-written four others—Old Buttermilk and Green Onions; Life in Berkeley County I & II; Snake Oil, Super Stars, and Me; and Ole Doc Tommy Scott. I have been doing a column, Quilt Pieces, for the Tri-City Newspaper in Harlan for the past five years. It is my wish to preserve the rich history of Harlan County through this blog and to give you a glimpse of what these beautiful hills mean to those of us who have lived here for years. Our families extend back to when Harlan County was founded in the early 1800’s, and it is important to save the wonderful stories and colorful history for future generations. Life was quite different in those bygone days, and it will not be forgotten. |
