Introduction	I am a registered nurse with more than 30 years experience. My siblings and I were fortunate that our parents were good communicators who shared important issues with us prior to their final illnesses. In contrast to that, I have found time and time again that families are called upon to make decisions for a loved one and are making these decisions based on inadequate information. Knowing what resources are available, what your loved one wants in the event of a life threatening event and who they trust to make choices on their behalf is information needed to make the best choices. Having the conversation regarding these and other issues early and often will provide the framework for informed decisions.
