Introduction | "Box of Rice" was the title of a column that I wrote in my high school newspaper. Forrest Gump's "Life is like a box of chocolates" has achieved proverbial status in the US. I wanted to bring my own twist to mama's words. So why is life like a box of rice? Well, for one thing, simply living is like a pristine box of rice, filled with perfect grains of fluffy rice. There is white rice, brown rice, sticky rice, purple rice, and more. And just like life, rice is not always perfect. Sometimes you run across a grain of sand, or an uncooked grain that will chip your tooth. You deal, get through the pain, learn, and continue eating. But most importantly, you can also spice up life by adding whatever you want to it—soy sauce, pepper, eggs, veggies, or meat. I am in China for the next 10 months, spicing up my box of rice. In this land of rice, I will be supported by the generous Parker Huang Fellowship. I'm working and learning at the IFChina Original Studio & Participatory Documentary Center at Jinggangshan University in Ji'an, Jiangxi, China. The studio was founded by Jian Yi, a 2009 Yale World Fellow, along with Eva Song and Douglas Xiao. |
