Introduction Raisa Veikkola’s work investigates subjects such as the interpretation of dreams and the subconscious, the representation of woman in Surrealism, Feminism, mythology and fantasy, gender representation and the symbiosis of modernity and folklore. She also finds inspiration for her work from her childhood memories: her grandmother’s magical pink attic where she could spend hours playing and digging for weird old dusty objects from the past, and all those fairytales that continue to enchant her to this very day. In fact her work aspires to create the illusion that these old found objects carry those surreal and magical qualities in them, just as she believed as a child. Raisa Veikkola counts among her visual influences Jan Svankmajer and Soviet animation, Russian Symbolism, Folk Art, found old photographs, Louise Bourgeois, Maya Deren, Vera Chytilova and Henry Darger.
