| Introduction | I live in the state of Maine in the very northeast of the United States of America bordering Quebec and New Brunswick, Canada and the Atlantic Ocean. I inhabit an old farmhouse, built in 1860, and live on 3 acres of the original farm. Most of the formerly open land has grown up to woods, which support populations of deer, flying squirrels, red and gray squirrels, coyotes, fisher, weasels, foxes, mice, voles, shrews, bats, snowshoe hare, raccoons, porcupines and skunks. Larger birds include nesting barred owls, broad-winged hawks and ravens. I have seen 115 species of birds from my yard in the seven years we have lived here. A tiny pond and brook supports six species of frogs and toads, four species of salamanders and an occasional turtle. I raise some 30 fruit trees and shrubs, roses and ornamentals, vegetables, herbs and perennials in the center of the property and try to be a mindful steward also of the native plants which include 17 species of trees. We are located on a bird migration route which occasionally lends spectacle to an already remarkable landscape. |
