Introduction My Beliefs about Teaching and Learning: I need to get to know my students both as people and as learners and I need to provide opportunities for them to bring their experiences into our classroom. I need to ensure that they realize that they are valued members of our class community.I need to have equal and high expectations for all students. I believe that all my students can learn, can be successful and I organize my learning activities with these beliefs in mind. I need to see the capabilities and strengths all students and work towards including all in positive ways.
Interests I belief that as teachers we should be teaching students and not content. As an English Language Arts teacher, I teach the specific curriculum outcomes and develop skills in communicating while simultaneously encouraging critical thinking and helping students to develop opinions or strategies to cope with the world around them. I realize that I cannot prepare my students for the work force by training them to complete a specific job, nor would I want to. Chances are the jobs that current students will be completing have not yet been developed. Thus I need to ensure that my students have a strong sense of self and the ability to think, communicate, collaborate and problem solve. I hope that my teaching encourages creativity and independent thought, as that is my goal. When asked for the right answer, I tell my students that it’s not my job to tell them what to think and that most times I’m still trying to figure out the questions and answers myself. Education is about exploration and expanding possibilities.
