| Introduction | One of my major goals for this semester abroad can be greater understood by a quote I read recently by Descartes: "I learned not to believe anything too firmly of which I had been persuaded only by example and custom; and thus I little by little freed myself from many errors that can darken our natural light and render us less able to listen to reason". Although I have been fortunate enough to thus far have traveled in my life more than some will travel in their entire lives, I have always traveled as a distant visitor, an outsider, a voyeur and thus I feel that I lack the experience of truly letting go of the customs and lifestyle on which I depend, and adapting to another. My goal is to truly be open to every element of this experience, even those of which I am afraid, and each day, to try to actualize the image of myself having a place within South Africa's society. I think if this goal is obtained, it will be a particularly helpful framework under which to conduct my independent study project, especially seeing as I hope to navigate many individuals and agencies as resources. |
