The Modern Garrett
My blogs
| Introduction | Grew up in the port of Stockton, CA. Learnt to read and write. (Schools ain't so good here, though. Give me a break). I left at 16 and landed on a merchant marine vessel in Galveston, TX; the year was 1900. Hurricane hit and I's lucky to get out alive; the ship wasn't. Made my way to the San Fran shipyards. By 1906, things had become a bit shaky. Another ship down. Figured I'd try someplace new, so I headed for the great New York City. Stepped off the bus and was met with "No Irish Need Apply." City reeks of shit and the people too. Never met a person as low-down as the stock brokers on Wall Street. Began working transatlantic with the merchant navy, again. Been moving between the Melting Pot and London Town. Flopped like a fish off the boat into the streets of King George V and there he was again: "No Irish Need Apply." I don't mind though; things are changing. Nineteen-eleven is over now and I've been taking notes of the changes I've seen and heard of this past year. I want people to look back and say, "Hell! They really got the gears going in 1911. Bully for them!" I don't know too much, but I'm here to give the world some perspective from a little guy. Here's a glimpse at 1911: |
