About me

Introduction Radio, music, and politics have remained the biggest passions in my life. Travel to Africa, India, The Persian Gulf, and Red Sea while serving in the U.S. Navy expanded musical and political horizons.
Interests The workings of government and how people respond to it; How mass media manipulates people (see Swift boating -- or distorted focus group research in the name of "public" radio audience building extremes); Economic and political development in sub-Saharan Africa -- I tend to view global conflicts more in a "Southern vs. Northern Hemisphere" sense, than "East vs. West".
Favorite Movies "Blue Collar" with Harvey Keitel, Yaphet Koto, and Richard Pryor in his only serious acting role (mysteriously not available from Netflix); "Sideways"; "Xica de Silva"; "The Harder They Come"; Alfred Hitchcock classics; "Thunderheart"; "Little Big Man"; "Bull Durham"; "The Fisher King"; "Good Will Hunting";
Favorite Music Coleman Hawkins; Coltrane's modal jazz; Sonny Rollins; Calypso; Samba; Choro; African-laced Jazz; Cuban Bolero; Cumbia; ANYTHING by Los Lobos; Joni Mitchell, Laura Nyro, Cassandra Wilson; Lee Morgan and Wayne Shorter; 40's and 50's R&B; and the eternal wisdom of Howlin Wolf and John Lee Hooker
Favorite Books Michener's "The Covenant", and "Chesapeake"; Michelle Mercer's "Footprints: the Life and Work of Wayne Shorter"; Ken Kesey's "Sometimes A Great Notion"; Tony Hillerman's "A Thief Of Time"; Saul Bellow's "Henderson The Rain King"
