| Introduction | In my youth, I developed a craving for speed, power and noise, but as time goes by I'm increasingly drawn to the peaceful pleasures of naturally-powered human inventions. Kayaking and sailing are among my favorite recreational pursuits these days. Collecting vintage hand tools is another. Like so many middle-aged men, I've never outgrown my fascination with toys and tools. The more I discover about them, the more I daydream of owning, restoring and mastering them. While part of me appreciates minimalism and simplicity, another part is pure packrat, and a sucker for ornament. The desire to acquire far exceeds my capacity to master much of anything. I need to work on that. |
