| Introduction | My name is Giuliana.I was born in 2010 with the genetic condition Trisomy 18 (Edwards Syndrome) It is the second most survivable autosomal disorder after Trisomy 21 (Downs Syndrome) Sadly,not many hear about Trisomy 18. In medical literature, the diagnosis has such a nullifying stigma it is considered "lethal"& "Incompatible with Life" Abortion/comfort care are often suggested to avoid a life of pain & suffereing. Early intervention like feeding tubes or oxygen are often denied based on diagnosis. Surgery, such as cardiac repair is frequently denied,even though 90% of performed surgeries end in success! T18 is said to be damaging for marriage,stressful on families & harmful to siblings.Candidly it is the opposite. Although challenges exist,many ARE surviving & thriving. The intention of my blog is to chronicle my journey forward and provide hope, the hope that my family was not given, for others. Positive information related to Trisomy 18 is scarce, so I will share myself & show that I am a LIVING face of the diagnosis. I will demonstrate that I am happy, intelligent, strong, & above all, an extremely valuable part of my family. Please follow me :) |
