Sponges and tongues are frequently misspelled. Is it because both are thirsty?
With a "live" language pronunciations change over time. When the printing press came out we were forced to settle on one way to spell things. From then until now we have had many words change spellings, meanings and pronunciation. Words spelled differently from British English to American English is a great example.
